I don't always agree with prize juries, and the Emmy system barely pretends to be looking for the 'best' programme / acting / technical work of the year anywhere on TV,* but one of the things that amazed me this year was that The Handmaid's Tale won best cinematography.**

Acting, fine, although Keri Russell, Evan Rachel Wood, and Robin Wright are all at least as good leads.

Writing, fine, the opening episode*** is very nicely done and the other series I rate are all well into their run.

Best drama series, fine, although The Americans is more political and, again, wasn't even shortlisted.****

But the cinematography was the worst bit of it! I would love to know what went on at the planning meeting: 'You can have gliding soft focus, or grainy handheld, or Better Call Saul-quality Ansel Adams-alike landscapes.' 'Give me a "by hand" wobbly soft shallow focus, and overuse drones looking down...'

The society's economics are dodgy too, but I wait in vain for 'Best Economics' Emmys and Oscars...

* Look at who nominates and votes. It's gotten a bit better recently, but it's still heavily biased towards the US dollars.
