Cloud backup is just like astronomy 2
Jun. 29th, 2018 12:17 pmFollowing my online backup provider of choice deciding that it didn't want to be in the consumer business last year I have just got around to deciding what to do about it.
The migration of the consumer version from the old PC to a new one was extremely easy - it noticed that it didn't have any backups for this PC, and asked if it wanted to take over the backups for another one. Yes, please. Done!
I then moved to the 'small business' version equally easily - the new client was downloaded, installed, and running before I noticed it happening. That's going to be $2.50/month for the first year, starting next month.
So I have a few weeks over a year of cheap online backup before it becomes more expensive.
Looking around again..
.. Carbonite are still still concealing how extremely crap various bits of their service are
.. Backblaze still still doesn't do Linux - except for something that looks very interesting for use on the servers
.. and SpiderOak have doubled what you get for the money for what's currently my tier: $129 a year now gets you 2TB rather than 1TB. But I am close to that with CrashPlan, going over that limit with SpiderOak costs HOW MUCH ($279 a year) and still only gets you 5TB.
For the next four days, the Humble Bundle Cybersecurity bundle has a year with SpiderOak in its $15 tier, amongst other things. If you're not already using an offsite backup solution and have less than 2TB of data you want to back up, then it's a very good deal.
