I feel like Simon Callow's in my new PC

I remembered this story today.

Simon was Mozart in the original production of Amadeus at the National Theatre. When Milos Forman was making the film, he met with Simon and said he 'obviously' couldn't cast him in the part (too uncommercial or something) but surely I can find you a part...?

Ah yes, Emanuel Schikaneder, who wrote the words for The Magic Flute as well as producing the first production - of course, who else?

Anyway, come the days of filming and Milos tells Simon he wants no acting! "Be natural!" he says, dozens of times when shooting the tiny section he's in the film. "H" says Simon under his breath each time, knowing that is what most of Europe call the note we call B (their B is our Bb).

Why remember this today?

Because the sodding Windows installer decided that the compact flash reader would be drive C. Clearly the two DVD drives would be D and E. Naturally, the other memory card readers are F and G.

So that leaves the drive the Windows system is on as H.

H?!?

Memory is telling me the only way to change this is to go through the installation process again (possibly disconnecting the memory card reader first!) but is there a way to ensure it assigns letters how I want them, rather than semi-randomly?

Oh, yes, obviously the *ix way is better, but we're coming to that in another post.

Control panel / Admin Tools / Computer management, then into Disk management, and right click on the partition/drive letter you want to 'change drive letter'.
I've occasionally had USB drives try to show up as E: or F:, when there was already a drive/share there, and that fixes it - it also seems to remember the device Id, so it comes back as the newly chnaged drive later.

My understanding is that works for everything other than $SYSTEM (or whatever the macro is for the drive the Windows system is on).

I've lived with it being D: for rather too many years on previous PCs (when copying from one to the other, it was easiest to keep it that way via messing with the partition table) but H:... sob.

Hmm, this was after having given the installer some formatted partitions first!

I'll see if I have a version of PM that a) understands UHCI SATA and b) boots from a CD - I've got one that a) doesn't and b) wants a floppy drive, but I don't think here's a floppy controller, never mind drive on this one.

ENO's 1980s production of The Magic Flute - 'retired' last year, but back next (I should ask for a free ticket: I paid to see the 'last ever' one) - was what got me into seeing opera.

The version of PM that I use runs off a memory stick.
I've not used it for a while but I seem to recall it installs a small app to the boot drive and reboots the machine to that so it can deal with the OS partition.

I feel your pain :).

All I want my &&£&£&$$ laptop to do is run a nursery tune music programme and then a download from tv, Night Garden or similar, and not go slow or die or in any way leave me with a rabble of 2 year olds running wild while I sort it.

They run SO wild. (Don't do that Maximo)
