Something I'm reading sometimes gives significance levels like this: 'p<0.01' and sometimes like this: 'p.<0.01'.

Dodgy typesetting or is there actually a difference?

I've been teaching stats for 10+ years and I must admit I've never seen "p.". Of course that may partly be that I don't /expect/ to see "p.". Even so I still think its a typo. "p", of course, in the variable conventionally used to represent the probability of something (though is some circumstances we also use the greek pi) but we don't usually regard variable names as abbreviations.
