Don't try to out pedant...
Sep. 9th, 2019 11:25 pmSo there's an annual mayor's charity quiz night for teams of four. I'm not on L's team.. until someone cancels on her about two hours before it starts.
One question is, if you arrange all the countries alphabetically, which is the first one beginning with C? The former mayor / ex-headmaster doing the questions says it won't be the first one you think of.
Well, that's Canada, I guess. Where else? Ah, Cameroon. Ah2, Cambodia. Hmmm... can't think of anything earlier.
But when it comes to the answers, he says that it's officially the Kingdom of Cambodia - and so starts with K !- so the answer of Cameroon is the right one.
Except that's officially the Republic of Cameroon.
So why doesn't that start with R comes the heckle? (You can guess where from...)
No adequate response is forthcoming.
Especially when it turns out during the break that the UN's official list of members has them as 'Cambodia' and 'Cameroon'.
But it also turns out that there's another one: Cabo Verde, previously referred to in English as Cape Verde...
Next year, I want to be asking at least some of the questions and that one will be in it - with the right answer - along with...
.. which is the first one beginning with D?

As with the two Germanies, they won't have a title that admits they only control part of it.
