Memo to self - re mouse freezing

Check the battery level on the new (to you) trackball, rather than restarting the display manager. Unlike the M570, the MX Ergo doesn't warn you when its battery is running out... the mouse pointer just suddenly freezes.

See if the mouse you never use but which uses the same unifying receiver works before deciding to do something more drastic.
