Dreams within dreams
Apr. 25th, 2021 11:32 pmI am going through old backup discs. On one DVD+R from late 2007 is a Virtual PC image that says it's a Windows 98 system.
Oooh, what's on that? I know I used to need to emulate Windows 98 in order to still be able to run something JA liked - Microsoft removed some sound or graphics library in Windows 2000 and never brought it back.
Virtual PC only ran on Windows. A quick look suggests that the last version only runs on Windows 7 and needs hardware virtualisation enabled (so an emulated Windows 7 system probably won't work), the penultimate '2007' version won't run on 64 bit Windows 10, isn't supported for anything after Windows Vista, and there's no longer an available download for it.
There is, surprisingly, still a download for version '2004', which might even have been what I was using then, but that doesn't run on anything even vaguely modern - Windows XP might be the last one it works with.
So, I end up using VirtualBox on this Ubuntu MATE Linux PC to emulate a PC for Windows 2000 for that to run Virtual PC 2004 and..
.. it's just a plain installation of Windows 98, with just some additions to make that emulation run a bit better.
I am almost tempted to waste some time seeing how quick it runs, with two layers of emulation going on.
