I've had unlimited internet at home since spring 2000, and vdsl broadband since autumn 2000 (the people who were offering the unlimited dial-up deal were losing a pile of money so they ended it and L wanted people to, you know, be able to use the phone for other things!)

So it's painful for us at the moment - our ISP has various DNS and routing problems, so we can no longer just look things up online or expect email to come and go instantly...

re DNS, there is nothing to stop you putting fixed (ie. not your ISP's) DNS server addresses in your machine rather than expecting it to get the addresses as part of the DHCP transaction. (Do this myself, in fact)
