a) Does anyone have a spare / second-hand Athlon or Duron CPU? Around 1600+ rated?

b) Does anyone know of a Win2000 driver / program / trick that will fake being a network card? I've finally got Virtual PC because I need to run some programs that don't like modern versions of Windows. (VPC lets you run several pretend PCs on your existing one - as far as software is concerned, it's running on a real PC.)

Unfortunately, it doesn't allow the emulated PCs access to USB ports, and that's where my xDSL modem is... so none of the emulated PCs can have internet access. They could access it via a network card, but i) the real PC doesn't have one and ii) if it did, I still need a CPU for the PC that would take over the internet access.

Get VMware (http://www.vmware.com), which does allow the client OS access to USB ports. It also creates a virtual LAN between the host and guest PCs.

Hmmm... This suggests the virtual PC will not be able to access the USB modem. However, if the real PC is connected to the internet VMware will make a virtual LAN between the real and virtual PC (you can set this to off, bridging, or NAT in your case) and so the lecagy version of Windows will think it's on a LAN that provides NAT internet access. I have a setup like that at home, and whenever the real PC that runs VMware is connected the virtual Win98 PC can access the internet too.

Unfortunately my copy of VMware Workstation 4 is for Linux and I don't think they have their very cheap "hobby" license any more.

Ask [livejournal.com profile] mstevens. I think he has one he's hanging onto for me... You're welcome to it.

Do you need any CRT monitors? My company have some going spare for a charitable cause. Mostly SUN and Iiyama 17", 19" and 21" ones I think. I mentioned you might be interested. If you are how many would you want?
