Weird spam scam call
Dec. 21st, 2020 12:48 pmThe recorded bit says it's from Amazon and they're just about to renew my Amazon Prime membership for "seven nine pounds nine nine". You're then invited to press one to say no.
It's so obviously fake, I'm not sure where to start! Not having an Amazon Prime membership at the moment? They way that Amazon definitely do not call you to tell you that they're about to take a pile of money out of your account for any recurring memberships you've forgotten about? The clearly fake number the call was supposed to be from? The way I don't even think Amazon have the landline number here, not least because I've never bothered to memorise it?
But where's the scam?
Someone at a call centre sounding like it's in the Indian sub-continent answers. Amusingly, they ask if I want to cancel the (non-existent) Prime membership, or renew it, or start one! So clearly, they're going to ask for one of my Amazon login details or payment details at some point, but deny this entirely when I ask.
Sadly, unlike the 'contract for difference' gambling calls that there was a rash of a few months ago, they don't want to have a long chat and hang up when I say that I know they're not Amazon, so I don't know exactly when they'd try it.
