Battersea Bridge - argh

This is an important bit of my commuting route, as it's by far the best place for me to cross the river.
It's recently been hit by a barge and, like the Transport for London press release says...
Pedestrians and cyclists
It is currently open to pedestrian traffic and cyclists only.
And that's been working fine.
Untilthis Tuesday morning when according to a policeman ordering cyclists to walk across Battersea Bridge at a time when there were about ten pedestrians on the entire bridge and despite the signage confirming that this is a shared pedestrian/cyclist route, TfL want to make Battersea Bridge pedestrian-only while it remains closed to motor traffic.
I have no idea - and neither did he - why.
If there have been any problems with near-misses or actual contact between the two groups of users, the obvious solution is to use the existing road markings and have one side of the bridge for pedestrians and one for cyclists until they reckon its safe for buses (at which point obviously all the pedestrians are going to have to use - gasp - a footpath).
If it is to be made pedestrian-only, I will have to start using the Albert and Chelsea Bridges, going very very slowly. I'm sure no-one will mind.
But with luck, it won't come to that - please use Transport for London's online feedback form to say 'keep sharing it' and don't forget to tell the Mayor too.
