lovingbothI'm generating an endgame database.
The program looks at possible positions and sees how good they are for each side. The idea is that it'll come up with a file about a gigabyte in size, which will enable another program to play the endings perfectly.
It's been running for about ten days. But the actual CPU runtime, so far, is only 14 hours 45 minutes. This is more understandable because of its need to refer back to positions it's already seen... the extent that in that time, it's read 11,131,225,984,164 bytes or 11 terabytes.
Not surprisingly, my hard disk light has been permanently on for the past ten days.
What would be useful :) is to have a PC with enough RAM to have a 2G RAM disk, so it doesn't need to wait for a real hard drive to seek and read the data. It'd probably do it in a day...
Or stick it on 'below normal' priority and it'll happily run in the background.

Old, but may do the job

- 2 x P3 750MHz
- 80GB SCSI disk
- Stylish and noisy box
- No OS. Failed to install Debian Linux.
You can have the machine and keep it if you like. Alternatively you could send me a copy of whatever OS and applications you want to run (Windows, I'm guessing) and I can install it and put it on a static IP for you.
Of course if your other PC is old I can just send you the RAM (PC100, I believe).

Date: 2006-01-19 08:42 pm (UTC)Alas, the RAM wouldn't be compatible. This is a new AMD64 PC and the other one in the house wouldn't take the registered DIMMs that the Z10 used.
Fortunately, it turns out that someone has already generated the database (and I was more than half way through in terms of size, if not runtime) and has offered me a copy.
Ah well, it saves buying 2G from Maplin (at about twice the price of online vendors) and returning it within 14 days.

Hmm, I wonder if I could persuade work that we really need the Z10 :)
