I can find people who will, for a one-off fee of a tenner or less, give me an 0845 number and send calls to it to a 'voice over ip' system of my choice.

Does anyone, for a possibly larger but ideally still reasonable fee, do that with a UK 'geographic' number like 020 1234 5678?

Sipgate should do that for nothing, and if you have a SIP client/hardware/software it should just relay the calls through. Outgoing calls cost but less than BT for most of the time iirc.

Does that suit your purposes or have I misunderstood your request?

Sipgate give you a 03** number. However you do need to register the ability to make calls with them - which will cost you £10. Mind you the calls can be cheaper than a regular landline, particularly when you can abroad or are to another Sipgate customer (free).

We have regular geographic numbers (0121 currently) and I've set up an 0845 which I never authenticated through SipGate as a test number. As I understand it the £10 you pay to set up outgoing calls is put onto your account as credit...

You can get a UK geographic number on skype for £10/month. Is that the sort of thing you're looking for?
