What are they like to use?

I don't like electric ones. Too hard to control accurately and too slow to get going. (My dream BiCon venue has gas..)

But induction and halogen both have a major neat factor and one possible house has the former.

I've used halogen but not induction hobs. Neither are as amenable as gas hobs. Halogen hobs inevitably have ceramic surfaces onto which spills will burn and they have to be cleaned carefully after every use with special cleansers. Induction hobs have the reputation of being fussy about what pans you can use on them, but I have never used one so can't swear to how much of a problem that could be. Halogens will definitely heat up more rapidly than standard electric rings, so in the absence of gas, would probably be my preferred option. (My opinions are based on experience with hobs over 6 - 10 years ago, so it's possible technology has improved in the interim.)
