Explaining to JA why Mrs Thatcher was so controversial was interesting. What I came up with was that she realised that our electoral system means that you only need just over 40% of people who vote to get absolute power. People who are not part of that do not matter, and you do not need to be nice to them. So she wasn't, and not just because that pleased her supporters.

As ever, Hugo Young nailed it just over twenty two years ago, when she resigned as leader. I don't think a word of that article needs changing.
