You lot obviously saw the same article(s) I did!

Yep, it kills twenty to thirty THOUSAND people a year in the USA.

Of course, most of them will be old, or with poor immune systems due to things like Aids or other such 'we don't care about you' conditions.

I didn't read any article. There are roughly 200M people in the US with a life expectancy of about 70. That means roughly 3M deaths each year. Flu making up about 1% of deaths seems like the right order of magnitude, so about 30k a year.

nope ... didn't see any article either, just felt it sounded the right sort of number. I too am sickened by this whole over-reaction about SARS (see one of my own earlier posts!)
