Amongst the books, CDs and DVDs I have for sale on Amazon is a nice camera lens.

This one, in fact - mine's the used one available for less than 2/3rds the price.

Per the condition note, I'm only selling it because I can't justify having this one and the equally nice Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 as well now I have a 10-20mm, so it was good to get an enquiry from someone.

They asked for some photos of it and gave a Yahoo email address, greenwoodjohnny996@Y_A_H_O_O.C_O_M - given that Amazon probably strip email addresses, that was ok.

I emailed some pictures - from a secondary email account rather than the usual one that Amazon knows about, and got a response:
Ok,get back to me with the link of the item also the name that you use to put the item on amazon so that i can be able to make the payment for you asap hope to hear from you soon.

Hmm, there is only one s/h one there, but... send the URL.

I just want to inform you that i went ahead to make payment for your item a short while ago and i have finished the procedure for the check-out and i believe amazon would notify you as soon as possible, am sending this item as a gift to my client via Priority Mail Express or Registered Mail and i don't want you to write the content on the package because it is expected to be a surprise gift, you may just write gift item on it.I have promised that i am going to surprise him on his birthday and i don't want to disappoint him this time when his birthday hope to hear from you soon.

i will be awaiting your reply as soon as possible concerning postage details.

Hmm. Well for a start, I wasn't offering to send it internationally. I didn't bother to reply and, as expected, didn't get any 'sold now' email from Amazon.

What I did get - to the email address I was using to communicate with 'Johnny' was..

.. an almost plausible 'sold now' email.

As well as going to the wrong email address, the two things that were giveaways were a) that it included the delivery address - as you'll know if you sell on Amazon, the real ones don't and you have to log into Amazon to get it, and

b) "You have agreed to Ship the item as soon as possible and also reply with a scanned copy of the shipment receipt after dispatch for processing.
Please contact us via sellerdeptpaycenter@accountant.com ,as this mailbox might not be monitored.

In the unfortunate case that you cannot provide the item that you have sold, you should issue a full refund through Money Gram. We would have advise you to make the refund through our system but the sales is oversea."

.. which is semi-literate and not at all how Amazon want you to work.

Even worse in that regard was a second email:

We have sent an e-mail to you to notify you that payment has been taken from the potential buyer. Johnny Greenwood, Tamron SP AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR LD Di-II Aspherical (IF) zoom lens

.. because Amazon really don't work like that.

While I don't expect anyone reading this to fall for this level of scam, it's quite possible that they'll get a bit better at it.

Thanks for this. I've never sold on Amazon and that looks pretty plausible by scam standards.
