If you want to travel outside the area ('zone') of London covered by your travelcard, you need to buy a Ticket Extension before you set off.

Your challenge is to find out, solely from the Transport for London website proclaimed as the official definitive source of such information, how much they currently cost.

I've got to this link http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/fares-tickets/2004/general-information-what-happens-if.shtml but when I follow the link to http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/downloads/pdf/fares-tickets/oyster-wallet-insert.pdf it is singularly unhelpful and very difficult for me to understand. This may be because I'm not familiar with London ticketing yet ... but still, it should be written in much simpler language and much more clearly for all the many many people that applies to! The inference I'm getting is that one can use the travelcard up to its limit but then the fare from the limit to the destination becomes payable. Is that correct? Is it even the question you were asking?

Sort of - the idea is that you have to have a valid ticket (or combination of tickets) for the journey to intend to make.

Because most stations aren't on a boundary between zones, and most people wouldn't want to get off, go to the ticket office, get another ticket, go back onto the platform and wait for another train...

... you can buy extensions to a travelcard, before you start, allowing your journey to go outside its zones.

The question is, how much does that cost?
